When Your Hearts In Pieces All Over The World
All the places you've been you met a part of your story...
Taylor Swift famously wrote, 'They say home is where the heart is but that's not where mine lives.'
Witnessing my first real Minnesota snow get gathered up and left to melt in questionable brown mounds on the sides of the road and abandoned corners of parking lots, I got to thinking.
Thinking about how different this winter has been from any previous winter i'd lived. Here I was thousands of miles from sunny SoCal bundled up in a winter puffy jacket and thermal layers and still some how cold!
Making my way back from a quick trip to the corner store and these lyrics hit differently during that musing. As London Boy played through my speakers, I realized – she was right.
I was heading to where I live, but my heart? It's scattered across the world like stars in the night sky, offering a way to guide me back someday if i decided to chart the course.
You know that feeling when a place becomes more than just a destination? When the memories are so sweet. Almost like chocolate morsels vs bitter cocoa nibs?
It can happen slowly or all at once.
For me, it came while touring ancient Scottish castles and along the windswept Cliffs of Moher. The first time was in Barcelona, where this California girl first witnessed not just an ocean, but a sea - something entirely new and beautiful. Each place became a part of me because I willingly gave a piece of myself to it, and in return, it shared its magic with me.
A blessing really, each of those places where a piece of my heart now resides. The memories are dear and the experiences life changing.
Remember when we talked about heimweh and fernweh? These German words capture it perfectly – heimweh, the ache for home, and fernweh, the longing for far-off places. Sometimes I wonder: when I dream of Ireland's ever-changing landscapes or Denali's vast wilderness, which am I feeling? The pull toward home or the call to wander? Maybe it's both.
✨ I'd love to know - have you ever connected with a place so deeply that you gladly left a piece of your heart there, knowing you'll perhaps return one day? Tell me about your place.
I can't wait to read your story!
